Interim retail leadership in Greenland’s essential goods market

One of Greenland’s largest corporations faced an urgent leadership challenge when it had to part ways with one of its executives. Its Retail Goods Division was suddenly left without a Director, creating an immediate need for experienced leadership in a role that was critical to the company’s operations and public responsibility.

The challenge was not only to fill a temporary gap. The company is responsible for supplying all regions of Greenland with daily goods, consumer products and fuel. With vast distances, Arctic conditions and a highly specific market context, the role required more than strong retail management experience. It also called for cultural understanding, operational judgement and the ability to lead effectively in Greenland’s unique environment.

Rather than treating the situation as a straightforward interim placement, the company and IMW partner Nextt & Mason looked at the broader leadership question. The organisation needed immediate continuity, but also wanted to prepare a promising internal candidate for the Director role in the longer term. The right interim leader would therefore have to do two things at once: safeguard daily operations and mentor the future successor.

The company had worked with Nextt & Mason before in a similar situation. That earlier assignment had been handled so successfully that the interim candidate was later offered a permanent position and still works for the organisation today. With that experience in mind, it was a natural decision to approach Nextt & Mason again.

Nextt & Mason responded quickly. Within one week of initiating the search, they presented three highly qualified candidates, each capable of taking on the Director role and ensuring progress. One candidate stood out for his ability to navigate across cultures, a quality that was essential in this context. Only five days after the presentation, an agreement was reached. Two weeks later, the interim Director started.

From the outset, the assignment was designed as a dual mandate. The interim Director would take responsibility for the Retail Goods Division while also acting as a mentor to the internal successor. This gave the company the stability it needed in the short term, while creating the conditions for a stronger long-term transition.

The setup proved highly effective. With clear expectations and well-defined roles, the collaboration worked seamlessly. To protect the interim Director’s authority and impact during the assignment, the organisation deliberately postponed the announcement of the permanent appointment until later in the process. This allowed the interim leader to operate with the necessary mandate, while the internal candidate could develop into the role with guidance and confidence.

For the company, the value of working with Nextt & Mason lay not only in the speed of the response, but in the precision of the match. The partner brought immediate understanding of the organisation, its market position and the specific demands of leadership in Greenland. Their candidate pool was activated quickly, communication remained efficient throughout the process and the proposed solution was tailored to the company’s specific purpose and needs.

The case shows how interim management can create value beyond temporary continuity. In moments of urgent leadership transition, the right interim leader can stabilise the present while preparing the organisation for the future.
